Conference: “Critical Junctures of Globalization”

The interdisciplinary Research Training Group “Critical Junctures of Globalization” will host its final academic event in cooperation with the Centre for Area Studies at the University of Leipzig on May 7–9, 2015 in Leipzig.

The intellectual point of departure of the Research Training Group has been the observation that globalization is characterized by dialectics of de- and reterritorialization and that it is of great benefit to focus on particular moments, places, and social arenas where these processes are negotiated. We call them hypothetically “critical junctures of globalization” (Bruchzonen der Globalisierung) while assuming that at these points in the history and geography of globalization decisions are taken that are important to the future phenomenology of global configurations, be it in the sphere of economics, political order, cultural patterns, or social settings.

The conference will bring together those who are currently completing, or have already completed, their PhD projects in the Group with external experts relating their own approaches to the concept of critical junctures of globalization. The conference will include scholars from the fields of political science, sociology, history and area studies, as well as cultural studies and theatre studies.
