Recommendation: “Suez, Lampedusa, Djibouti City: Border Zones of Globalisation”

In her article “Suez, Lampedusa, Djibouti City: Border Zones of Globalisation” Valeska Huber explores global mobility and border crossing in Europe.

She uses the world press photo of 2014, “Signal” by John Stanmeyer, which shows migrants holding up their cellphones in the hopes of better reception so they can call their loved ones before crossing the Mediterranean sea as an illustration for “the multiple meanings of connection and disconnection in an age of globalisation.” Furthermore, Huber examines the current forms of mobility and reactions towards them from a contemporary and historical perspective, comparing it to the situation in the early 1900s in Egypt where “illegal Mecca pilgrims” crossed the Suez Canal.
