Recommendation: Modern Middle East Studies as a Distinct Intellectual Field

With his lecture Modern Middle East Studies as a Distinct Intellectual Field Professor Roger Owen from Harvard University offers a personal history of the emergence of modern Middle Eastern Studies as a distinct multi-disciplinary field within the Area Studies family, focusing mainly on the creation of University Centres in London, Oxford, Harvard, etc. by a set of academic entrepreneurs beginning with Sir Hamilton Gibb.

Furthermore Owen stresses the importance of personal experience within the culture one is teaching about and the necessity of a broad knowledge of the history of the discipline.

The lecture Modern Middle East Studies as a Distinct Intellectual Field was initiated by the Middle East Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). It was recorded on 21st October 2013 in Old Theatre, Old Building.
